Over the last couple of years I travelled all over western canada for my job. Here's what I'd usually do. First stop would be the hotel. This doesn't count though. Then I'd usually try to find a restaurant. In Calgary for instance I looked up a steak house. If it's not time to eat than I'll head for the nearest free tourist attraction. When I was in Vancouver I went to Stanley park right away and found the totem poles.
-
If I have no "tourist info" I;ll go the info/tourist storefront 1st and get maps, etc. If I have all the documents and literature, then usually I buy a hop-on/hop-off bus pass.
-
My room, I hate lugging around all that baggage.
-
Always the hotel first. Then it all depends on if we are hungry, what is available to do, and what we want to do. The rest is flexible. The hotel is mandatory LOL.
-
Usually a toilet.

My brother Gerry says, "Whorehouses." He knows a lot--he's worked groundcrew at Harvard and MIT for nearly 10 months. Gerry says you can judge a city/town/borough by the quality of its brothels (a synonym for whorehouse...others include heifer den, cathouse, bordello, and bagnio). He doesn't make time w/ the slatterns, he simply does a walk-through (so he says). Also, Gerry suggests you check out the following to get the flavor of a new town: * graveyard(s) * Hardee's * the Amish district
-
Galeanda, Gerry mentioned, too, that if you can find a local gay bar then the town is progressive. I disagree with him. If a town has a gay bar, this seems like a form of segregation. Thoughts?

Find my hotel, use the 'facilities' and the ask at the desk about places to eat or what to see. There is usually little brochures or pamphlets near th eentrance that tells you all sorts of interesting things to see and do in the area, or grabg a free local paper.
