I've had HP's since about 1993...not too fond of their low-end stuff but I like their good stuff as far as printers. I've exposed several models to great abuse (vibrations in an 18 wheeler, drops form 3-6 feet, running posterboard through them almost 3x the designed paper width tolerance, etc) and they pretty much take it in stride. When my current one breaks I'll still buy another HP. I've returned Epsons in the past, and I've encountered numerous broken Lexmarks when I was doing small biz consulting. HP all the way for SOHO printers....the nearer to their top of the line the better. If you need something cheap as dirt that will break but get you by, then go lexmark or brother (avoid HP's low-end stuff)

I too have a HP photosmart, "All in One" Printer-Scanner-Copier. I am *amazed* at the quality of the scans and copies. I often use it to enlarge tiny items. I just bought a new hard drive, with info printed in tiny font on the drive itself. I laid the drive gently onto the scanning glass. I now have a legible copy of the drive label, saved for future reference. I also have an old Canon S500 with clogged color jets, which I use for black only. It satisfies 99% of my printing needs. I bought a refill kit and I use the black ink to refill just that cartridge. (Bought the kit before the color jets clogged.) IMPORTANT: The printer itself is just a fraction of what you will spend for printing. Before you buy, check the prices for *ink*. Many stores sell printers dirt-cheap, and they make their profits on the ink. Plain text (letters & docs) are cheap enough, but color photos tend to cost more in ink and photo-quality paper than a professional print shop charges. If you buy ink locally, you will probably spend a small fortune. If you live near a Costco, check their business & copying dept. A local Costco (near Seattle) does refills of certain cartridge brands for a fraction of the cost of a new cartridge. Do some research so you can get a printer that will satisfy your needs at a cost you can afford.
