  • My friend had what sounds like a very similar problem in his 99 SL2. It may be a damaged temperature gauge. Check to see if your coolant meter in the instrument panel still works by driving the car for at least 5 minutes. If you know your car's engine is warm but the meter hasn't moved, that's what your problem is. The engine sputters when you start it because your car thinks the engine is starting cold and therefore it keeps the choke engaged for too long.
