  • They probably had no need because they use them as tools themselves and naturally wore them down. But sand itself is abrasive and could be used for such. In fact they say walking on the beach is an excellent exfoliant for your feet.

      Definitely. In the million or more years of our ancestors' existence, the main durable thing they had available was rocks. They became very adept at collecting, using, reusing and piling them up.
