1) The intrinsic brightness of the star, due to its size and type. 2) The distance of the star. 3) Interstellar dust. 4) Atmospheric conditions. Clouds, dust etc. 5) Light pollution. I live in a very bright city, and the sky appears a little orange which drowns out some of the light from the stars.
