I guess cuz it still supports and lifts the breast but gives the apperance of not wearing a bra. Perhaps to create the appearance of a naturally perky breast.

I'd think they were only for nursing babies, but I suppose someone might think that's sexy or something. Me personally. I don't want my girls getting cold.

Most of the time it's so your nipples will show through your clothes better and give you that "I'm not wearing a bra look" while wearing a bra for support. Some people think they are sexy. Most of the time it doesn't work that way because you can also see the little edge of the bra that goes around the nipple making it look really weird.

I love open cup bras. They are incredibly comfortable, however, you have to spend the money to get the right ones for your body. I really like the open feeling and having my nipples rub against the material of my blouse or top is very nice.

For nipples to poke through it looks like. Seems like it would be kinda un-sexy after you took your shirt off.
