    Adding a teaspoon of Epsom salts (Magnesium sulfate ) to one cup of distilled water will produce "hard water". http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/homeexpts/SOFTWATR.html Note that this is not the same as the hard water which comes out of a faucet, but it is a type of "hard water" and will serve the purpose for any experiments you may want to do. Hard water from the faucet contains dissolved calcium and magnesium, along with other items, which water softeners remove. More info on Hard Water - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_water
