2/3 years old. When I was 3 I was using my dad's computer - typing words in and reading stories and stuff. When I was 4 and started pre-school my teacher couldn't believe that I could read as well as I did. She actually talked to my parents about it, lol.

3. My mother read to me every night and I eventually memorized my favorite book and read when she wasnt there to read to me...that is when my life-long love affair with books began and still going strong

2 or 3, probably closer to 3. Everybody was very impressed... in fact, my parents love to embarrass me with the story of how some priest at my Aunt's wedding reception didn't believe them when they said I could read. They put a Time magazine in my hand and said "Read this to Father <Whatever>". So, I did.

Mom's not around anymore to remind me when that was, but she did tell her own story about being denied to check out a book at the library because she was "too young" to understand it. The librarian told her to take out several books from the children's aisle and come back when she had read them all and could tell her what the stories were about. Mom went back the next day and passed the quiz. The book she wanted to read: "The Boy's King Arthur." My kid was reading alone at 5/6, especially any stories with animals. I went from library to library in search of more. But at 17, as Jerry Garcia put it, "the words he knows are all obscene, but it's all right."
