  • Probably not literally to death, but they'd eat til they puked.
  • I've heard that one before. It sounds like a far fetched story but dogs do have gluttonous appetites. I wouldn't put it past a beagle or some other dumb hound though, i.e. chow hound. I bet all the intelligent dogs such as terriers or working class would have enough sense to know when to call it quits.
  • No, my dogs don't really seem to like to eat much.
  • I have had many dogs and some would eat until they burst, threw up or passed out. Some dogs know when enough is enough. I don't think any would eat enough til they dropped dead but at worst, they might need hospitalization.
  • My current dog is the only one I have ever had, (out of about 50), that will eat until she throws up everytime. We have to monitor her food for this reason. I've never seen anything like it. All my other dogs over the years, would just stop when they were full, but not Eboni (Ebby).
  • It seems that whenever my one dog goes near his food dish, he grabs a bite. But he's never eaten enough that he threw up. Well, other than when he had worms, but that was (obviously) for different reasons. That actually made him stop eating.
  • Our dogs used to be freed fed. The barrel was always available to them. They didn't overeat. They just ate when they were hungry and stopped. But that was with kibbles, dry food. Then we switched to a natural diet and fed raw meaty bones. They get very eager to eat it but I don't think they would eat till they puked. They seem to get tired and stop.
  • i've owned a rescue dog.she had been terribly starved as a pup and for the next 10 yrs you could only feed her a set amount.if she had a chance she would eat until there wasnt any left.on the other hand i now have a rat terrier who has food access 24/7 and eats whenever he wants, usually eats 1-2 cups a day.
  • One of my dogs would, I don't know about other dogs!
  • Mine don't. I keep food out for them and the dishes will still have food in them 24 hours later. Neither of my dogs have ever had to compete for food. I kinda think that is why they don't gobble it all up at once.
  • I doubt if they would eat themselves to death literally. Some dogs will eat like they are never going to get another bite. My dog's dish is filled in the morning and she will eat as much as she wants then nibble out of it for the rest of the day.
  • My dogs are always leaving food in their dishes, & I've never had a dog that would eat to excess. Cute story: I have a very large dog that lays beside his dish & watches our kitten sit in the middle of his food & eat.
  • I sincerely believe my Golden Retriever would.
  • Now i have two dogs, My oldest dog he wouldn't ever. He would have a full dish of food and literally split it in half and he would eat that half then save it till dinner then eat again. Now Jamie, he would eat untill he would die, i believe that whole heartedly. He is crazy about food and i don't understand why. He has ate till he has puked, he inhales his food to the point where he is yelping while eating. It is discusting, but we only alow him 1 cup of food at a time.
  • They would start with their tail, and chomp away until they reached their head and then the teeth would continue chomping until the rest of the body (head)completely dissappeared! The same can be done with a vacuum cleaner if put upon itself- the end result would end up in the third deminsion.
  • If your dog is eating that much, there's probably a reason. I'd guess boredom.
  • My rotty has access to unlimited amounts of food and mainly eats in the morning and sometimes again in the evening. He's in very good condition, gets lots of exercise and is not overweight.
  • probably not...I, however, might. :)
  • some dogs would probably eat until the got sick, but not to the point of death. my chow is free-fed, so it wouldn't affect her at all.
  • Only if the dog was a labrador or retriever - most other breeds are too sensible
  • No. Dogs know when to stop.
  • I don't think they would eat themselves to death, but dogs eat as much as they can because they figure they might not eat again later.
