That depends on the circumstances. * For example: if China attacked Taiwan unilaterally, then Japan would probably do no more than protest loudly and officially. * If World War III began, then Japan would probably jump in on the side of "the defenders". * On the other hand, if North Korea attacked Taiwan, then Japan might get involved more directly. * Note that Japan still has a very strong "no military involvement in foreign conflicts" policy. Even in the Iran war, when the US was practically begging its allies to support the military action, Japan sent only (armed military) engineers - that is: not troops, but (important) support personnel. * Japan's general military position remains: "only use military force if Japan itself is in need of defense".
