The first official world champ was Steinitz (1886); then Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Euwe, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik, and now Anand. This is the "traditional" line - The world chess federation tried to name thir own line of champions, (beginning I think in the 1990s...) but few take this seriously

Offical world champions Steinitz, lasker, capablanca, alekhine, euwe, Botvinnick, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Fischer, karpov, kasparov, kramnik, anand I don't care about what Fide thinks. So 14... I think I'm missing one or two =/
