America runs on petroleum, and we ON PAPER are self-sufficient in petroleum at this time. (In fact, we import lots of foreign low-grade crude that many of our refineries were originally designed to process, partly because those refineries were designed to process it, partly because it is so much cheaper, and often we sell the more expensive but higher-grade crude that we extract here to other nations.)
