    Its a way to control people is what it is. Every encounter I have with the local church I end up working for free. I regard the all members of the clergy as a bunch of freeloaders that don't want to work. Majority of the churchie people I know are simpletons reformed drug addicts or criminals on parole.

    Who are you referring to as "wise"? If religion is regarded by the common people as "truth", then denying the truth doesn't make one a wise person. As to the usefulness of religion by rulers, they would use any tool at their disposal to maintain the upper hand.

    Disagree. For an obvious example, see: all of the (many) leaders throughout history who suppressed one religion or another, or the few who suppressed ALL religions. Certainly the typical ruler does not consider ALL religions useful, and certainly some rulers have considered STAMPING OUT all religions to be useful! We can add the examples of rulers who spent their lives and/or fortunes for the sake of their religion. Clearly THOSE rulers did not consider religion to be merely something useful!

    There was always two schools of thoughts, the outside ritual given to the common man, and the inside ritual given to a chosen few (the mystery schools), and this is common throughout all religions. So it can be used to make money (a lot of money) and to exploit people, and it can be used to change a person for good or bad, change a person for good that they no longer fear death, and then of course you are dealing with a person who is completely free, and cannot be manipulated, these were the mystics, they often chose to be separate from the world.
