      I don't understand how you can read different contexts into it. Basically what it means is, "You take care of me and I'll take care of you". There are variations like "You watch my back and I've got yours" or "you do this for me and I'll do this for you (or 'i'll take care of you')". But it's all the same thing - taking care of each other. "Illicit" has nothing to do with the phrase.

      Simple, we all think differently. Understanding the phrase is how a person takes it. To the word "illicit," it has a lot to do with the phrase, since scratching each other's backs can be done in a legal or illegal way. We all need to look at a broader picture.
