  • Typically guys do that, but...I think it's a holdover from German, where (classically) transportation "vehicles" - such as SHIPS, for example - were (and still are in English and German) identified as "she" and (indeed) in German all "ships" are feminine in gender (as is also the case in English, in fact properly one always uses the feminine pronoun when referring to a ship). Note that in French (the other primary influential language in English), "ship" has a masculine gender.
