  • The West (United States in particular) is trying to protect the petrodollar. The Nixon administration saw an agreement with Saudi Arabia that involved purchasing their oil in exchange for Saudi Arabia trading in US dollars. Thus began the economic trend where the US dollar was the standard currency between countries. If anything happens and the petrodollar fails, it will destroy the US economy. This is why Libya and Iraq were "taken down" - both leaders were trying to pull out of the US dollar economy and the US had to take them out. If the truth be known, that's what happened to Germany in WW2 as well. The Ukraine issue poses a different threat - Russia is no Libya or Iraq. They can back up their threats and this has the US as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Biden is trying to push the US over the edge in his quest to convert Capitalism to Marxism. That's why he refuses to do anything beneficial for America - and why he will go down as the worst president in history - a fitting title for a traitor.
  • No..but "the West" very clearly does not want to do what it would take to stop that from happening. "The West" made that clear to Russia months ago - when they threatened sanctions, and only sanctions, rather than military support. Of course, this was a "green light" to the Russian leadership to go ahead with the invasion. "The West" is keeping their promise to Russia of only sanctions.
  • I don't know. Ukraine is one of the offshore banking countries. That said it's worlds apart from safe-haven countries like Switzerland, and many banks in Ukraine are controlled by the local mob as a means of money laundering. However, on the 20th March 2017, the Guardian revealed that it had received documents from a three-year investigation by the Latvian and Moldavian authorities into what has been dubbed the Global Laundromat. According to the newspaper, these documents show that between 2010 and 2014, British registered companies and British-based banks helped move out of Russia at least $20bn of the proceeds of criminal activities. This should come as no surprise. In 2016, the Home Affairs Select Committee concluded that the London property market was the primary avenue for the laundering of £100bn of illicit money a year. The investigative journalist Roberto Saviano has said of the international drugs trade: “Mexico is its heart and London is its head.” London had not become the global capital of money laundering by accident. Money launderers and those financing terrorist activities have two main requirements. The first is a place crowded with financial transactions, in which their own will be easy to lose. The second is a place where those who enable the setting up of companies and opening of bank accounts are prepared to turn a blind eye to who is the owner of a business. Secrecy over the beneficial ownership of companies is the main conduit of money laundering. Of course Brexit may actually affect this. I have looked into Zelenskyy, Jewish born, Russian speaking, during his campaign for president, concerns were raised over his links to oligarch Ihor Kolomoyskyi. And President Poroshenko and his supporters claimed that Zelenskyy's victory would benefit Russia, which is odd considering Zelenskyy's apparent stance. In 2019, Kolomoyskyi was included in the list of the 100 most influential Ukrainians by Focus magazine, taking the 3rd place. In 2021 the US banned him, and his family, from entering the country, claiming that he corruptly enriched himself as governor, and posed a serious threat to the future of the Ukraine. Kolomoyskyi was born in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union, to a Jewish family of engineers. Kolomoyskyi is the co-founder of the PrivatBank (and its informal Privat Group, respectively) and was appointed chairman of its board of directors in 1997. Other fields of activity include: ferroalloys, finance, oil products, mass media, metal and petroleum industries (also in Russia and Romania). Through PrivatBank he controlled Aerosvit Airlines, Dniproavia and Donbassaero. Through the asset management company Mansvell Enterprises Limited, he controlled Skyways Express, City Airline, and Cimber Sterling aviation companies. He also has media interests in the 1+1 Media Group (the channel Zelenskyy announced his presidential campaign), which operates eight Ukrainian TV channels. The Pandora Papers were the largest trove of leaked data exposing tax haven secrecy in history. They provided a rare window into the hidden world of offshore finance, casting light on the financial secrets of some of the world’s richest people. The files revealed Zelenskiy participated in a sprawling network of offshore companies, co-owned with his long-time friends and TV business partners. They include Serhiy Shefir, who produced Zelensky’s hit shows, and Shefir’s older brother, Borys, who wrote the scripts. Another member of the consortium was Ivan Bakanov, a childhood friend. Bakanov was general director of Zelenskiy’s production studio, Kvartal 95. All were associated with Zelenskiy’s home town in southern Ukraine, Kryvyi Rih. After winning power, Zelenskiy brought these close allies into government. Bakanov became head of Ukraine’s SBU security agency. Zelenskiy made Serhiy Shefir his first assistant, an unpaid role that involves handling the president’s daily schedule. A fourth member of this close-knit group, Andriy Yakovlev, is a film director and Kvartal 95 producer. Zelenskiy has said these appointments were about personal trust rather than financial cronyism. Before becoming president, Zelenskiy declared some of his private assets. They included cars, property and three of the co-owned offshore companies. One, Film Heritage, which he held jointly with his wife, Olena, a former Kvartal 95 writer, is registered in Belize. But the Pandora papers show further offshore assets that Zelenskiy appeared not to have revealed. Film Heritage had a 25% stake in Davegra, a Cyprus holding company. Davegra in turn owns Maltex Multicapital Corp, a previously unknown entity registered in the tax haven of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Zelenskiy, the Shefir brothers, and Yakovlev each held a 25% stake in Maltex. On 13 March 2019, two weeks before the first round of voting in Ukraine’s election, Zelenskiy gave his quarter stake in Maltex to Serhiy Shefir, documents show. It is unclear if Shefir paid Zelenskiy. Bakanov witnessed this secret transfer and signed the offshore papers. Roughly six weeks later, after Zelenskiy’s landslide victory, a lawyer acting for the Kvartal 95 group signed another document. It stipulated that Maltex would continue to pay dividends to Zelenskiy’s Film Heritage, even though it no longer owned any stake in the company. Its main revenue comes from activity in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, according to a Maltex client profile. The Pandora papers do not indicate whether any dividends were ever paid or their size. Nor did they reveal how many payments might have been made. Zelenskiy’s wife, Olena, is now the declared beneficial owner of Film Heritage, meaning any payments since 2019 would have flowed to her. The key document – dated 24 April 2019 – says Maltex holds shares in companies that produce and distribute TV films. One reason for setting up Maltex was “tax-efficient accumulation of business profits”; another, it states, was “legal protection”. Borys Sheifir said Bakanov had mostly set up these offshore “financial schemes” in order to protect the company from “authorities and bandits”. “Speaking honestly, I’m not ready to respond to you. It could be that I’m an owner [of Maltex],” Shefir told the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), one of the Pandora papers’ media partners. He said he was trying to divest himself of his offshore interests, but said this was a slow and difficult process. Serhiy Shefir, Bakanov and Yakovlev declined to comment, as did their lawyer. Of course this all may appear hypocritical in respect to Zelenskyys strong stance on cleaning up Ukraine’s oligarch-dominated ruling system. The Pandora papers show that at least some of the details in the scheme alleged by Poroshenko’s party correspond to reality. They show that part of the Kvartal 95 network was managed with help from Fidelity Corporate Services, an offshore consultancy and one of 14 firms whose documents made up the leak. The files show that Zelenskiy and his business partners used companies based in the BVI, Belize and Cyprus. The assets held via these offshore companies were wide-ranging. They included real estate in London. Shefir owns two top-end properties – a three-bedroom apartment in an Edwardian mansion block in Regent’s Park bought in 2016 for £1.575m, and another three-bedroom flat in nearby Baker Street, opposite the Sherlock Holmes Museum, and purchased for £2.2m, according to Land Registry records. Meanwhile, Yakovlev’s BVI company Candlewood Investments owns a luxury flat in a Victorian mansion block in Artillery Row, Westminster. The properties were acquired around the time Zelenskiy’s show was turned into a feature film and recommissioned for a second series. It is unclear if the three flats are let out or used on an occasional basis. A Russian company that bills itself as an “individual service for high status clients” manages them. Zelenskiy’s apparent business connections to Russia via Maltex were controversial. Poroshenko faced criticism for owning a chocolate factory in Russia at a time when Ukraine was fighting a war against Russian troops and their proxies following the Kremlin’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Hence, Ukraine is corrupt, and the people's have never really responded to a centralised government. At present it's basically a re-enactment of the war in Donbas. But of course those funding and sponsoring presidents, are often the controlling faction. And when you start looking into these people and corporations it's corrupt to the core, still no less than our lot. It's a good question Jenny. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Donbas
