Why were calendars so important for ancient civilizations?

Imagine if you subsisted on livestock and vegetables you grew yourself. Knowing when to plant hay or vegetables is the difference between bounty and starvation. If you lived in a cooler climate, you'd also need to know when to harvest wood, what days were good for rebuilding your thatched-roof cottage, etc. With no calendar knowledge, life would have been a lot riskier.
