Traditonal Chinese symbols represent words, not letters of any alphabet. Japanese has several types of writing. Kanji uses the Chinese symbols for words, but may pronounce each symbol several ways, while Chinese symbols generally have one pronunciation for a given symbol. For example, the symbol for small, young, new can be O, Ko or Sho, and the symbol for beautiful can be Mi, Bi or Utsukushi. Also used are two phonetic scripts called Hiragana and Katakana. Some Roman letters like we use are used in Japanese media. .This script is called Romanji.
