How does family and culture affect a person's success in life?

I grew up in a community where people worked hard, made sacrifices, and mostly did well in life. My father and his associates started a company that became very successful and still exists today. Both my brothers worked hard and started successful firms, my older brother competing with my father. Though a dropout and heavily into drugs I was able, partly because I knew it could be done and I had it in me, to pull my life together and land a corporate job in which I did well and have in the course of almost thirty years advanced with the company.
