The the crew of the first Space shuttle flight STS 1 was John Watts Young (Cdr) and Robert Laurell Crippen (Pilot) launched on April 12, 1981. Eileen Collins first flew as pilot on STS-63 in 1995 then again as pilot on STS-84 in 1997 and became the first female Commander with STS-93 in 1999. Eileen retired from NASA on May 1, 2006 and is still alive.
