  • My guess is their culture, family or local church requires it. It is entirely possible that the cultural sense of modesty they have learned from family, etc. would make them uncomfortable otherwise. If someone else knows of an organized Baptist group that teaches this, I will leave that up to someone who knows. I am pretty sure I have met and spoken with women of at least three major US Baptist denominations who did not always wear long skirts.
  • The reason is modesty, and adherance to Gods command to dress as women, and not look like men. Deuteronomy 22:5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God. 1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; 1 Corinthians 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. The clothing of the world, or lack of it is a stumbling block for men. That is a sin for the ladies, because they are tempting the men to lust for the flesh by not covering their bodies. That does not make it all the lady's fault if the man does seccumb to the temptation, but it is a stumbling block for him. The part of your question about even when swimming, I have not heard of. The swimwear a lady wears must also be modest and provide adequate coverage as to not incite lust. Those are the guidelines in my church. I do not know of a lady that swims in a long skirt, but do in a one piece suit with a skirt on it that comes to mid thigh or so. I have a pool at my house and have had many church people over to swim. I have never seen a lady get in the pool fully dressed.
  • As an IFB woman, I do wear skirts everyday. However, they do not have to be "long", like Little House on the Prarie style. My church teaches that your skirt should fall at least to the bottom of your knees. Most IFB churches also teach that no make-up should be worn, but we are allowed to cut our hair. We should remain modest in the eyes of God, and not be a stumbling block for fellow Christian men.

  • I am a Baptist born and raised. As far as baptist women wearing long skirts, it is not true we pretty much wear what ever we want, even when we go swimming.

  • We wear long skirts to be modest. I don't know of anyone that wears long skirts to swim in, but I wear culottes when I go. The Bible says that showing the thigh is considered nakedness.
  • The clue here is SOME Baptist women, so those who have automatically jumped on the Christian abuse waggon, please take a breath. It is for modesty, and those particular Baptists who do wear long skirts (even to swim in), do so because they believe that is the best way to be modest. That being the case, not all Christians feel the need to go that far to be modest, although modesty ought always to be a consideration for Christians, in line with Biblical teaching.

  • It is their choice what they wear, even when they swim in it. The Bible says to be modest in the way they dress and many times it is more modest to wear pants or shorts than a skirt. I was born and raised into a baptist family and my dad works for a baptist college. The college and our church has nothing against the women wearing clothes other than skrts when appropriate and the skirts do not have to be knee length, just modest.

  • HI, I agree with the person that said it might be pentacostile instead of Baptist, also possibly JeJovahs Witness (hope I spelled that correctly) or Mormans, but I am Baptist and although it could be a "modesty" thing, or in my case, I'm not built for wearing a revealing swimsuit, so I usually wear a t-shirt over my swimsuit, I don't think it's a "rule" though.
  • The Bible says be not conformed to this world (Romans 12:2). How can I tell a Christian women from a non-Christian if they all dress alike. If you know the lady, then you should see her light shine. Pants show the curvatures of the behind, were the dress is less revealing. Todays society, women naturally take offense claiming womens rights. Sorry ladies, I didn't write the Bible, we all have to uphold it though. You will one day stand in-front of God Almighty and will have to take your punishment for willingly, disobeying the modest rule. You will be held accountable for making me lust after you and I will be held accountable for adultery (ten commandment, not good). I realize that's old law, but isn't He the same yesterday, today and forever? God likes what he likes and I can only hope you take heed to all of these warnings!!! May the Holy Spirit convict all immodest women, because I'm tired of going places and seeing how much a women can not wear and get away with it. If your a modest dresser, then I thank you as a man for helping me not sin. The less sin we have, the closer to God we'll be, is that a bad thing? I'd say yes, by reading some of your comments.   • I'm a Biblical Pentecostal by experience and faith and yes, biblical modesty is definitely "in" right now. When God's spirit indwells a person they begin to dress and act differently. I have been doing some extremely interesting studying on a female demon goddess named OYA - the name literally means - "the one who puts on pants and goes to war". She was the true deceiving demon behind Joan of Arc, and I believe behind a lot of woman today. That's how I found this demon, watching the story of Joan of Arc. Some of the first acts Joan did after her visions with her "saints" were to cut her hair and put on pants! When I checked up on her patron saints, which are original demon gods and goddess changed by the Catholic Church, and looked into their feast days I found OYA. This demon goddess is definitely behind the "feminist" movement and all places you see woman fighting for “freedom”. There is a spirit that comes with wearing pants - if you haven't tried going "pants" free for a week - try it – pray about it and then put on a pair of pants –I guarantee you will “feel” the difference. I was actually angry with the Lord for the answer, because I loved my jeans!! But, No More! The ladies in our Sunday school class tried this and all but one lady now refuses to wear pants because of the demonic spirit that comes with them. Satan has tried for centuries to destroy women - first by attacking our hair and then our dress – which are true and powerful spiritual protections for our husbands, our homes and our communities. If you have never done a Biblical study on what cutting your hair does to your husband spiritually that will shock you!! Want revival in your church - grow your hair! Your husband not saved - grow your hair! The Lord made the woman the protector of holiness in and for the home, a beautiful position, for holiness truly beautifies, but Satan has done everything within his power and used everything to steal and destroy holiness in the home, he knew if he could attack us women on things we see as basic he would destroy our families. There is an old song we sing around Pentecost - I went to the enemies camp and I took back what he stole from me - I took back what he stole from me - I took back what he stole from me- I took back what he stole from me. Well I went to the enemy’s camp and I took back what he stole from me...He's under my feet...He's under my feet... Satan is under my feet. Time for a few of us to walk into the enemy’s camp and realize what he has stolen from us!   • i'm a Baptist and I wear bathing suit when swimming because it's the right thing to wear, ang God knows that , maybe these women just want to wear skirts to swim, its their choice.
  • I'm a Baptist, and I have never heard of such a thing. However, I have seen this practice within the Pentacostal community.
