Oh yes I am Nunya. I remember when people smoked at their desks at work too. Ashtrays everywhere ... now about the only place that allows people to smoke everywhere is in Las Vegas ... ugh.
-
I don't remember seeing smoking in hospitals or stores. I remember what Barb mentioned, people smoking at their desks in offices. And I remember cigarette vending machines.
-
When I was a young child, people used to smoke everywhere. Now, smoking in public has been banned in my state. I have never smoked, so I do not care very much about the habit not being allowed. +5

I dont remember hospitals or grocery stores but I do remember the malls. I was about 15 and my friends and I would have our parents drop us off at the mall where we would sit in the food court and smoke as if we were so cool. I also remember being able to buy cigs at age 15 by simply saying "they're for my mom" My dad has told me stories of how when he was in High School, there was actually a designated smoking area for students!
-
No when was that

Yes, the only place a person couldn't smoke was the elevator. Not sure why that was.

I was visiting a cancer patient 20 years ago and I remember seeing another patient walking the hallways smoking. I don't remember people smoking in grocery stores, but it was allowed in my office until about 17 years ago.
-
Yes. I'm old enough that I was allowed to smoke in my office in my first job. First two jobs actually.

There were ashtrays at the ends of the grocery aisles. I remember it well.

No, but I remember when restaurants all had smoking sections, and my parents would smoke with us kids in the car.
-
Yes, I am.
-
Yes - the maternity waiting rooms were a famous place for smoking. And as a cruel joke, we would smoke in front of someone whose arms had IVs in them and 'forget' to offer them a drag. Good times.
-
Yes. Also in theaters, restaurants, beauty shops and on airplanes. And in the homes of non-smokers unless they specifically asked you not to. Then many folks would get indignant and leave! It seems so odd now to see older movies where everyone lights up in any old place!
-
Yes and in restuarants,at work and in people's homes. Everybody had ashtrays-even non smokers. Oh , for the good old days.
-
Yep... And restaurant kitchens, and other food-handling areas, and ... Damn near anywhere they wanted to.

Yes, I particularly remember being in a nice Italian restaurant and a lady at another table was eating spaghetti and smoking in between bites. My GF and I were laughing because we were waiting for her to get it mixed up and stick her cig in her mouth and eat it...+5
-
Yes,you could smoke most anywhere. Seems like in church too.
-
Yes I remember going into the teaches lounge at school and it smelled like an ashtray. My school used to have a smoking area. "For the Students" Good Question Girl!

Yes, people smoked everywhere when I was a kid and the kids would "smoke" candy cigarettes that came in a box that looked just like the real thing. At the time it seemed so normal and now it seems completely absurd.
-
Sure,I can remember a room mate in the hospital when I was in the first grade smoking, and plenty of visitors too.
-
Yes. It was discusting then as well.
-
Ye, I remember and I am glad one can no longer do so.
-
Yes, I am. So much has changed in my lifetime (as you know) it's kind of freaky sometimes!
-
Yes I am and I remember when you could go in barefooted and shirtless too!

Oh yeah. Smoking was allowed in the hospital when I had all four of my children. It was allowed on airplanes, the mall, the court house and anywhere else I can think of. I do smoke but I believe smoking should be restricted. It should never be allowed in small or tight places. Or where there are many children. Ventilation makes a big difference also. With ventilation smokers and non-smokers can be together with no problems.
-
Yes, and offices and in aeroplanes and in motor cars, and, and, and. And I was one of them at the time. It is hard to believe how selfish I was. Mind you, people still smoke in motor cars. A law is being passed in SA that people are not allowed to smoke in cars with children present -- a good thing. Maybe you have such a law already.
-
Yes! And I also remember going to a real playground that had nothing but dirt and rocks under the playground equipment that was usually made of steel and had sharp edges that could hurt you if you were not careful!
-
I went to the hospital in the 70's with spinal meningitis. They provided ashtrays. You could also get beer, with a doctor's prescription. That was in the good old days when insurance was paid by the government (I was in the military). The only bill I had to pay was for the telephone. I spent two weeks there and my phone bill came to $7.50. You could also smoke in college classes but you had to furnish your own ashtray.
