If you eat them properly you can pull the meat inside the tail out without having to break the tail open... So... neither. I eat it all, but don't break the tail open. If I can't suck it all out, I leave what's in the tail.

I don't eat the tails. I get already full with an order of shrimp. The tails are edible though. They can be eaten for the nutrients.

If you pinch with your thumbnail just above the tail, the entire shrimp will pull out of the last segment of shell they leave on it. I do not eat the actual tail, but since Jenny says they are edible next time I may put them in a blender and use them in a roux.
