I know that we call our president "honest Abe", but can any one tell me if the saying "I can not tell a lie" is connected with Lincoln or Washington for cutting down the cherry tree.

It is attributed to George Washington but is believed to be an exaggeration at best of an occurrence where he stripped the bark off of a tree. It was handed down in folklore for many years before anything was ever put into writing regarding the statement.
