It might be a failed VSS or vehicle speed sensor. I don't know the specifics of your car but it is probably mounted on the transmission where the speedometer cable is also attached. You will probably have to take this to a shop for confirmation and replacement.

Reminds me of a crankshaft position sensor back in the day. That sort of thing should throw a CEL code. If you can't read codes from the dashboard (some combination of turning the key on-off-on-off) Autozone usually reads those codes for free.
