You don't. You let them sleep when they need to. Welcome to Parenthood.

Sugar or red dye always jacks mine up (hence, I won't give him any.) Going outside to look for cool rocks works wonders as a natural alternative.

You don't. As Duke says, you let them sleep when they need to. I had the opposite problem with my son. I wanted him to take a nap during the day but from age two he refused to take naps, or stay in a pushchair for that matter.

While I agree that letting them sleep is usually a better choice, if they need to stay awake then apple juice is known to be more 'waking' than coffee/caffeine ...

Most toddlers need 10-12 hours sleep and if they get less than that they are crab masters! A pre-schooler or Kindergartner may get by fine without naps and sounds like what you are struggling with. What worked for me and worked like a charm is a carved in stone sleep routine...same time to bed and same time up no if and's or but's. No staying up later for guests either. A bedtime routine was crucial to our kids getting a good nights sleep. Once you stick to a routine you will get your sleep too!

Give him coffe But you are going to regret it. Better to let him sleep.

When he sleeps, you sleep. I babysit my grandson on weekends, and whenever he goes to sleep, I make it a point to stop whatever I'm doing and take a nap myself. That way, when he stays up until 3 am, so do I. Another trick I have learned is to go in his room at night, close the door, and I take a nap on his bed while he plays.
