  • I don't know what you base that on. It appears women now make up the majority in most undergrad liberal arts programs, including philosophy.
  • Says you! Or am I some strange exception I was unaware of?
  • Wouldn't it be ironic if this were a philosophical question and you got a shit-load of female responses? :P +6 That's because women are always right. You need to learn that now before you get into trouble. They don't need to discuss things. It just IS right. ;)
  • Perhaps you mean to ask why men tend to debate philosophy more? I cannot find any hard statistics on it except that in China the percentage is nearly 50-50 and they attribute it to the fact that since the revolution in 1949 the situation for women in China as one of complete equality.
  • Somebody's just asking for a gender fight. Let's see how long we can go without getting into one.
  • i cannot speak for others but i do talk the talk and if a man cannot keep up i get bored.............and what could have been a promising relationship fades to dust. i am a woman............diff per.
  • In the movie, "My Fair Lady," Professor Higgins says, "You want to talk of Keats and Milton, she only wants to talk of love, You go to see a play or ballet, and spend it searching for her glove,"
  • Hmm... That's an extremely deep question. It might not seem like a subject of interest to females due to the exclusion of women from philosphical study through the classical period. It's undeniable that for thousands of years, women were thought of as inferior and lacked the capacity for abstract thought. Misogyny amplified with the works of Homer and Hesiod. Pythagoras, however, was known for equal opportunity (remember the role of his wife Theano at their school - and that she is credited for the Golden Mean). Not sure about Socrates off the top of my head, but Plato gave a small allowance to women. Aristotle was vocal about his complete hatred for women. The only philosopher through antiquity who was influential in the elevation of women was Jesus. How was modern philosophy affected by having these roots? Is it just not as interesting to women (in a similar vein as sports)?
