So they say. Leo Tolstoy believed you could he said, "If you want to be happy.......BE"

-
Well, they say one can choose to be gay, so...
-
it's just not the same as actually being happy though
-
In the USA you have the RIGHT to PURSUE happiness,it isn't a given that you are going to be happy,,I chose the happiness over the expectation of it.
-
That's one of my best kept secrets.
-
yes, actually. (: lucky for me, i discovered this at a very young age. and discovering it made a world of a difference in my life...

Sorry, the neuroscience does not back you up on that. While it is true that most neurologically-healthy people who live in industrialized 1st-World countries could be happier if they chose to be, exactly how happy you will ultimately be depends upon many factors not entirely in your control. And even if you think you ARE 'choosing to be happy', you may be wrong.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stumbling_on_Happiness

Choice and habit are two very different things. Many times have I exalted in such a revelation, only to find my heart and way returning to a bitter jaded cynicism. My shadows fit like home. In this comfort, I may very well have chosen a happiness of my own.
-
I did know that I could choose to be happy. I choose to be happy most days. I love this philosophy. +4
-
Thanks for the reminder. It's easy to forget.
-
Yes, you can certainly choose how you respond to events and circumstances in your life.
-
Yes, I made that choice.
-
It's certainly my choice to be ...
-
I did. In fact, I was long ago since I gave up on being sad and now I am the happiest man in the whole world. :P
-
Yep, but it's easier to just have a compilation of carefully selected music on hand to place yourself in the right mood.
-
You can? no I didnt know that
-
I don't know if I can actually choose it-but I can recognize when I AM happy. That's always a good start, I imagine.
-
Yes. I believe that happiness is a choice. Nobody can make you happy but yourself. It's nobody's fault for your attitude but your own. After all, who has control over it? YOU.
-
Yes I do that everyday despite my disabilities and physical pain.

I think happiness may be somewhat elusive and is a consequence/result of many things. I can definitely choose to repond positively/optimistically rather than negatively and pessimistically...I can always seek and find a silver lining no matter how dire the circumstances. I can always learn something from every experience. I can choose to be kind, truthful, accepting, modest, helpful and fair. But I'm not so sure that I can choose to be happy and have it happen. Happy Wednesday! :)
-
no how can i be happy if i dont know how to measure happiness icecrem gives happiness till it melts and then zilch
-
I did!:) But I also think it's good to be sad sometimes too:)
-
I am happy to report that, yes, I have discovered that secret.

I disagree in every sense of the statement. I attempt every day to be happy, but outside circumstances decide that I cannot obtain such a goal. People don't like me. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Nobody really seeks out my company. That really dampens the chances of "choosing to be happy" sure, I could ignore that situation, but then I would be lying to myself. So, no, I didn't know that. Becuase it's not true. Sure, it can help a lot of people, but that's not the be-all end-all fix for any situation.
