  • ..I'm starting to think it's only where I live that "cop" has a negative connotation.. Whenever I'm online, people use it to refer to ANY police officer.. I've never heard that offline.

      It is an informal and somewhat diminutive usage. I got one of those fake IRS calls including a threat that they would send "the cops" if I did not reply. Oh, NOES! Not the "COPS"!
