  • Location. New Zealand lies southeast of Australia between latitudes 34 degrees south and 47 degrees south. Area. New Zealand is 1600 kilometers north to south with an area of 268,000 sq km. It comprises two major islands: the North Island (115,000 sq km) and the South Island (151,000 sq km), and a number of small islands. Climate. New Zealand has what is known as a maritime climate, as opposed to the continental climate of larger land masses. Climate and weather conditions in the seas around New Zealand can cause climatic volatility. Rain is more evenly distributed in the North Island than in the South. Rivers. The Waikato River in the North Island is the longest New Zealand river at 425km. The longest navigable river is the Whanganui, also in the North Island. Official languages: English, Maori. First inhabitants. New Zealand's first inhabitants are believed to be the Maori although it had also been hypothesized that the first Polynesians to inhabit what is now New Zealand arrived around 800 AD and were the Moriori, or moa hunters. (The moa is a species of birds, now extinct, some of whom were as tall as three metres.) The hypothesis that the Moriori were the first to arrive in New Zealand appears to have been disproved by Maori oral history. The Moriori and the Maori belong to the same Polynesian race. Women's right to vote. New Zealand gave its women the right to vote in 1893, a quarter century before Britain or the US. While it is no longer the case, New Zealand was once governed as a part of the territory of New South Wales (later a part of Australia). When Australia federated in 1901, New Zealand was offered a place as one of their states. New Zealand refused and is its own country with no ties (other than economic and commonwealth) to Australia. A kiwi is not a fruit - it is New Zealand’s native flightless bird and a slang term for a New Zealander. Kiwis call the fruit “kiwifruit” - they are also known as Chinese Gooseberries. New Zealand is one of only three countries that have two official (and of equal standing) national Anthems. The first is God Save the Queen (the English National Anthem) and the other is God Defend New Zealand. The other two countries with two anthems are Denmark and Canada which both have a Royal Anthem and a State anthem. New Zealand was the first country to have its three top positions of power held simultaneously by women: The Prime Minister (Helen Clark), the Governor General (Dame Silvia Cartwright), and the Chief Justice (Sian Elias). Wellington, the Capital City of New Zealand (and home to me!) is the southernmost capital city in the world. New Zealand is a fairly liberal nation with homosexual marriage (Civil Union) being legal and prostitution, soliciting, and brothel keeping being legal. The driving age is 15, the consensual sex age is 16, and the drinking age is 18 (though minors accompanied by adults are allowed alcohol in restaurants).
  • There is a statue of Robert Burns in Dunedin (at least there was when I was there) and the city had a university and a distillery before it had a public water supply. Also the philosopher Karl Popper, worked for a time at the University of Otago.
  • 1) Few things are as rare and beautiful as a flight out of Milford Sound in in crystal clear weather while sitting in the copilot's seat. 2) The Tasman glacier is spectacular. Walking on it using crutches is difficult and hazardous but oh-so-fun. A handsome guide will assist you. If you find a blue glove in a deep crevasse, it is mine. 3) The variation in climate and topography from Invercargill to Kaitaia is astonishing.

  • 9-28-2017 The first Western explorer to land on what is now known as New Zealand was a Dutchman named Abel Tasman. When he arrived in the 1640s, Tasman thought he had landed on an island off the tip of Argentina. Well, it was a long trip and he was a bit confused. Dutch cartographers Hendrik Brouwer and Joan Blaeu discovered Tasman's mistake, and Blaeu named the area Nieuw Zeeland after Zeeland, the westernmost province of the Netherlands. http://mentalfloss.com/article/56233/where-old-zealand
