Let's put it this way. The entire time I was in Japan, I only ate Japanese food. France -- French food. Why eat American anywhere else than in America?
-
Generally, I have been to a few places where some of the local food hasn't been very appealing. I'm all for emerging yourself into other cultures, but not to the extend of eating something you really dont want to.
-
depends on the food. :)
-
Of course.... Try and get a sense of culture and the whole vibe of where you are traveling.
-
Definitely! I love trying new foods. I just don't want something on my plate staring back at me, is all.
-
Well of course I try them, but I do sometimes stick to what I know as well. For instance, first meal I ate when travelling was a MacDonalds. Wasn't that I was scared, just needed a meal where I knew what it was made of. After that I tried lots of different food - Guinea Pig being both the strangest and worst - but sometimes you just need a meal of what you know.
-

Always. One of the first questions I ask in any new area is "Where's the best place to grab a locally cooked meal?" I look for family owned restaurants that have been open for a generation or more. If I know what type of food a region is known for I'll pick a particular menu item (ribs, falafel, redfish) and try to find out who has the best. The locals know, particularly police and ambulance workers - they eat out all the time and many local places give free or discounted meals to them.
-

Always. I have been privileged to eat steak tartar and other foods in Frankfurt, Germany; sushi, Kobe steak and fried whole shrimp in Tokyo, Japan; plus Mexican foods in Baja and the Yucatan.
