Any polite atheist, when told "God bless you," will say thanks for the kind sentiment. As for that logical inconsistency in some religious folk --- thanking God for good outcomes, but failing to blame him for bad outcomes --- there's probably little way to overcome that stark absurdity. Sorry.

One cannot have good without bad. There could not be light without darkness. So yeah, thank God for your ill-health knowing full well that after ill-health comes health.

Do you say thank you to someone when they run over your dog?
-
I would say " I thank Him for the blessings in my life. God doesn't make us sick, he may allow it for a reason, His will be done.
-
The Bible states we should give thanks in all things because everything works for the glory of od. Esier said than done. But I have seen great things happen as a result of my brain tumor, and for that I AM thankful to God.

Everything happens for a reason. Only GOD can fully control what Must happen.

I wouldnt blame God, we are all gonna die.. if I were to blame HIM, then I'd have to blame HIM for every cruel injustice there ever was.....and every death...that is simply not logical....satan plays a big role too... so , no , if I were gonna blame anyone , it would be satan...my sister lost my neice at 16..lots blame God...but she told me, people forget, Satan's out there too...

I praise God no matter the situation I'm in at the time. Currently, I'm recovering from spinal fusion surgery and looking at the rest of my life filled with pain of one sort or another. I still praise Him. I thank and praise Him for all aspects of my life...good and bad. I don't blame God for my life being filled with pain on and off for the rest of my time on Earth. I also don't blame God for taking my father from our family when I was 5. Everything happens for a reason, although we may not understand why, or the reason may not be perfectly clear to us at the time. Faith is funny that way, sometimes. Those that don't believe have a hard time understanding that. And that's okay, because that's the way it's meant to be.

For an atheist, it is probably just a statement.

I think you would have to consort to which God or Goddess was influencing the sphere in which you're praising or condemning. If you're sick, then you'd want to plea to the gods of medicine and health, maybe even the goddess of luck if you're REALLY sick. If your crops were failing or sickened, then you'd want to appeal to the god of harvest or fertility goddess. There are many gods and goddess for different sphere's of influence and situations. Choose wisely. =)

I would say that they may be right if someone attributes everything in their life to "the will of God". But most folks it seems do believe in the idea of free will, so this would not necessarily work there. Either way.

God made our first parents perfect without flaws or Disease. They screwed up by following Satan. Until that time they were "Tricotomous" & had Eternal Bodies. Now we are Dichotomous & have a "Limited Physical Life Body" Infected through "Sin". We have an "Eternal Soul" & when we die, where it spends that Eternal time in "Soul/Body" form is dependent upon our belief in Christ here on Earth. John

back when i was a believer i read a book about these two christian sisters that were in a nazi concentration camp. every day when they prayed to thank god for good things or ask for things they also thanked god for the bad in their lives. though, like i said, i'm no longer a believer that story has stayed with me. i think it's good to be thankfull for the bad along with the good because it helps you to accept your hard times better and learn to be more peacefull. it's like an irish comedian once said, the irish are no luckier, they just have a better attitude. if they fall and break an arm they say "aren't i lucky i didn't dislocate my shoulder as well!"
