As soon as you become a member of sag it pays of very well. sag:screen actors guild for example the latest movie i was in was the good shepherd. it was a very small role, only one small line. its been 1 and a half years and i am still getting paid. when a member of sag you get percents of sells (acting and editing). imagine hitting a big role. get paid in advance and get percents every month! IT A GREAT AND FUN BUSINESS
