I would say... about...2 1/2 months.

It depends on a lot of things, doesn't it? Time of year, route, resources (do I have enough cash or credit that I can buy the food and supplies I need as I go?) Assuming normal progress at about 4 mph, I could walk the 1400 miles or so in about 350 hours, give or take. If I could walk as much as ten hours a day, then I suppose I could do it in four to six weeks, barring injury or accident.

Well, you could probably make about 8-10 miles a day give or take a few. 1780.60 miles from Topeka to San Francisco. Take 1780/10= 178. So lets say you manage to 15 miles a day. then 1780/15= 119 days. So you're looking at about 4 months or so. BTW, I got the mileage per day because I remembered my 4th grade teacher telling us the average Wagon on the Oregon Trail could make 15 miles a day on a good day. That was from Independence, MI to Oregon City, OR,
