  • First step: restart the computer while holding ⌘⌥PR. (That’s command-option-P-R.) Keep holding these keys until you’ve heard the startup chime, three or four times. This will reset the PRAM, which stores all sorts of hardware parameters. If that doesn’t work, unplug the computer, remove the battery, and hold the power button down for ten seconds. Then replace the battery, plug it back in, and hold the power button for another ten seconds. That should reset pretty much everything in the computer.   • Thanks for trying to help. The stupid thing randomly stops working for hours at a time and nothing will start it back up, so it's always a crapshoot:(
