They use both.....but cloth or mesh bags are becoming much more popular.

Both. I bring my own re-usable paper bags.

They have recyclable plastic, so we use them for household rubbish. They also sell jute bags, and Bags for Life - ones you can use again and again until they fall apart, then you can smoke them!! (not really, I made that last part up) I've got hundreds of them because I keep forgetting to take them with me, so I buy more! But I'm saving the planet, right? ;-)

They use plastic unless you ask for paper.

I have plastic, but we offer a card to be punched. One punch for each cloth bag the customer uses. 50 punches on the card earns a free hand-dipped ice cream cone. The customers seem to like it, many more are bringing the cloth bags now.

Mostly plastic. My local Kroger just this year did away with paper bags.

My supermarket still use plastic bags, but I always take my own fabric ones that I have used for years.

Now that the pandemic is over I use my own bag. In the city they charged 7 cents for each plastic bag. Outside the city, they're free. I usually shop outside the city limits.

they encourage you to bring your own bags..they sell bags that break down in the environment for $1 and if they rip etc the store takes em back and replaces them free ..and they sell a 15 cent plastic bag as well,..the store i shop at has a bin there to place all your plastic in for recycling ..i save all my plastic..even the plastic off of the bread etc and place in the recycle bin
