  • Last quarter. At the full moon, the Moon rises just as the sun sets. At the new moon the Moon rises at the same time as the Sun. The Moon rises about 50 minutes later each day. So, in order for the Moon to be rising at midnight, it would have to be later in the cycle than the full moon and it would have to be halfway between the full and new moons. Therefore, it is at the last quarter.
