because a very long time ago (and this is just my theory lol) people were named after their perfessions. there were so many different kinds of smiths - blacksmiths, etc. that people just started abbreviating their names to just smith. lol is that a weird theory?

Mr. and Mrs. Smith got it on... lol... no its just like a lot of people have the name Davis... my moms a Davis... and so are a bunch of my cousins... its odd... we may never know...

Alias names. What's more bland that "John Smith" in North America? We're fully of people with fake names, and "Smith" is the easiest to adopt. That's my theory.
