Bernie Taupin was Eltons song writer. Alot of the songs were written by bernie taupin alone. Others were jointly written and some written by Elton alone. Bernie Taupin is a genius.

he is the sausage to eltons bun!

I always thought Bernie Taupin collaborated with Elton John in writing his big hits back in the 1970s.

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Taupin "In 1967, he answered an advertisement for a lyric writer placed in the New Musical Express by Liberty records A&R man Ray Williams. Thus began the famous and well-loved songwriting team of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The pair have collaborated on more than 30 albums to date, though John worked with other lyricists between 1977 and 1983. Taupin's lyrics include such memorable tunes as "Rocket Man", "Tiny Dancer", "Candle in the Wind", "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", and 1970's "Your Song", their first hit. The 1991 film documentary Two Rooms described the John/Taupin writing style, which involves Taupin writing the lyrics on his own and John then putting them to music, with no further interaction between the two."

Bernie wrote the words, Elton wrote the music. Their early career and relationship is chronicled on Elton's album "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy". (Bernie's the Cowboy, Elton is Capt. Fantastic). Later on, Bernie co-wrote some really fabulous works of genius such as Starship's "We Built This City" and Heart's "These Dreams". ugh.

HE WAS HIS LYRICIST
-
He used to co-write his earlier songs.
-
Bernie writes the lyrics, Elton writes the music. It's the way it's always been for them. Elton can't do words, Bernie can't do music. A match made in heaven. Bernie is incredible. Just the best lyricist ever. A brilliant talent.

1) "By the time they worked together on the Tumbleweed album, which was released in 1970, Taupin and John had developed a style of collaboration in which Taupin worked alone, giving the lyrics to John who then developed the melodies. Taupin's writing habits have since changed; where once he simply sat down and wrote unaccompanied, he now finds using a guitar helpful in the creative process. He plays chords on the guitar as he writes the lyrics. It was a real first for Taupin after forming the Farm Dogs when the members sat around in a circle equipped with guitars, and worked out the music as a group. Taupin has written lyrics for hundreds of songs, many of which Elton John has created melodies for and recorded. Some of their hit songs include "Your Song," "Daniel," "Rocket Man," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," and "Candle In The Wind." Their 1975 album, Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy, was autobiographical in nature: John was Captain Fantastic and Taupin was The Brown Dirt Cowboy. Taupin also released three solo albums during the 1970s and 1980s. He wrote lyrics for other artists too, including co-writing all ten songs on Alice Cooper's 1978 album From The Inside. Taupin wrote the lyrics for "We Built This City," recorded by Starship in 1985 and "These Dreams," recorded by Heart in 1986. He has also penned lyrics for Melissa Manchester, Rod Stewart, John Waite, and others." The lyrics and accompanying photo booklet are infused with a specific sense of place and time that would otherwise be rare in John's music. "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", the only single released from the album (and a number 4 hit on the U.S. Pop Singles chart), is a semi-autobiographical story about John's disastrous engagement to Linda Woodrow, and his related 1969 suicide attempt. The "Someone" refers to Long John Baldry, who convinced him to break off the engagement rather than ruin his music career for an unhappy marriage. It was generally viewed as the best track on the album; Rolling Stone writer Jon Landau said, "As long as Elton John can bring forth one performance per album on the order of 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight', the chance remains that he will become something more than the great entertainer he already is and go on to make a lasting contribution to rock." The 2006 album "The Captain & The Kid" is the sequel, and continues the autobiography where "Captain Fantastic" leaves off."
