If you have apps installed it loads them, your friends list pics take time to load, then there's bulletins, ads, comments. You can choose not to have the apps show up on home, this will save some time.

it can be a lot of reasons: if you're strictly talking about the home page, it's probably the number of users on the site at the time. if you're talking individual myspace pages, i'm betting that it's all the crap that the user has on his page (images, applications), and also the ads that myspace has.
