    12 feet per lane is the default standard for 'traveled way'. Highway engineers designing 'typical sections' refer to the national manual on geometric standards (Green book) used by most states. The green book recommends adding 2 feet if there is an adjacent curb and adding various additional widths on curved ramps. Recommended width for parking lanes is 8 ft. (substandard widths survive on many older streets)
