I don't know the purpose except they are as telling stories. But for some reason I have been thinking about Aesop's Fables lately.

To teach those willing to listen. I think that fables are really important in that they don't just tell you what to do, but provide a dramatic story about choices and their consequences.

It's a life lesson and imparting of wisdom in a format that informs and entertains.
