Your question made me curious, so I looked it up on a couple of Italian sites. This is what I found: It goes back to Roman days. The number 17 in Roman numerals is XVII. According to this site I found, as the anagram of the Roman numeral's anagram is VIXI, Latin for "I lived", which would mean being dead. That is why it is considered an unlucky number. Friday 17 is considered an unlucky day, because Friday is the day on which Jesus was killed. Furthermore, if Friday 17 comes in November, that is the unluckiest day of all, because November 2 is memorial day to the deceased in Italy, and November is therefore called "the month of the deceased". So, there you have the whole story!
