The Harry Potter movies as a group are surprisingly (to a very satisfying degree) close to the books. This is because (a) the author is still living and (b) she negotiated to maintain creative control over the script * The movie The Gospel of John is the only Bible-based movie I've ever seen that is "true to the Bible". A very low-budget production, but still: very satisfying to see the original story told accurately in a movie. (And for me: that's very satisfying for any book or story that I like.) * Some few stories have been very well-done despite significant changes. For example: Disney's original The Jungle Books, The Rats of NIMH, and Disney's Robin Hood. But even Disney has butchered several stories IMO, including Tarzan and Aladdin, for example. (Not that Disney's Tarzan was a bad movie, but it wasn't anything like the book or any where near as interesting as the book; and with Aladdin they just butchered and strung together several unrelated stories, and inserted the most un-satisfyingly un-wondrous djinni imaginable.)
