Why does the US use high fructose corn syrup in their soda instead of real sugar?

There is actually a whole list of reasons. In a nutshell: it is cheaper and produces more consistent, superior results (at least: in areas other than taste). Personally, I find ALL diet sodas to be superior in taste to the HCFS sweetened counterparts, without exception, and I'm pretty sure it's the flavor of the HFCS itself that I find unappealing. BUT of course I'm unusual in that regard.
