Gandhi believed that Indians, weakened by colonial rule, needed discipline and physical vigor. Mussolini’s youth movement impressed him on that narrow point. Gandhi wrote afterward that Mussolini was: “one of the great statesmen of our time” (not the greatest) because he had “stability of mind” and “patience” in rebuilding Italy but Gandhi also said he rejected fascism, violence, and dictatorship entirely In other words, Gandhi was praising a trait, not the ideology.' 1/24/26
