Why do some people think happiness comes from oneself when happiness can be mutual such as making a persons day or doing something funny or watching animals do funny things?

Because the emotion arises within the person, not without. If a person's happiness remains dependent on outside circumstances, then that person is a prisoner to others approval and disapproval.
