Why are the "hand-offs" between MSNBC hosts so awkward and painful?

I notice whenever MSNBC goes from one host to another, they are caught in an painful situation. They have to bs with one another for a minute. It looks staged. Am I the only one who sees this? Its so awkward, and looks like it hurts too. >> I also notice this when the host says good-bye to the guest. The guest always waits several seconds to say "good-bye." It is NEVER automatic. It is always a 5 second wait. What are they waiting for? Why does it always look so painful?
