Just think to yourself "Where is a good place to hide this key in a spot where I am likely to find it a year from now, after I forgot where I put it". I learned that simple but frequently effective method when I went to put something away that I just bought. that I use less than once a year. I decided on a good place and when I went there I found the same item that I bought several years previously and had entirely forgotten about it. That method doesn't work all the time but the number of times it does work is pretty impressive.
