How do you fix a sewer snake when the cable twists inside the spooler cage

I let the sewer snake motor run too long after the tip of the cable got stuck. It caused a twist and loop to appear inside the spooler cage. This cable loop is very tight and although there are openings in the cage it is very difficult to move it to untwist. I've tried pulling the cable, counter-twisting it by hand, using the motor in reverse to untwist it. Nothing works. I need to get this machine back to the rental store. How do you get a twist out of the spring steel cable when it is stuck inside the spooler cage?
